How can we collectively reconcile a need to reduce carbon pollution with peoples’ widespread fondness for driving?

In 2014, a $1.6 billion expansion of the 405 freeway in Los Angeles was completed. This project took 5 years in which a single lane was added in each direction over a 10-mile stretch. Since the completion recent studies have proven that drive time over this freeway has actually slowed for commuters. In overpopulated areas such as Los Angeles, demand does not stay the same when you increase the capacity of the freeway.

Mass transit according to a USC/Metro study found that the Expo Line light rail, traveling between Downtown, L.A. to Culver City, which runs parallel to the 10 freeway had no impact on traffic through those areas. This specific project took 9 years to complete and $1.5 billion taxpayer dollars.

The bottom line is $3 billion dollars later and over a decade longer no real solutions have been presented to actually solve traffic problems or combat climate change with a solution that is meaningful and substantiated.

The excessive number of cars throughout major metropolitan areas, such as Los Angeles, cause significant harm to our environment, accounting for 30% of carbon emissions which are a main contributor to climate change.
